Desertification in Sudan, good practices and lessons learned

During its first participation in the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties on issues of desertification, land degradation and drought, which was held in Riyadh – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the period between December 2-13, 2024, the Deriba Center for Environmental Studies organized a discussion session on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at the headquarters of the State of Kuwait entitled: “Desertification in Sudan, good practices and lessons learned“, presented by Professor Talaat Dafallah Abdel Majid, an expert in natural resources management and  specialist in forest and desertification issues, and the dialogue was moderated by Alaa El-Din Abdel-Rahman Youssef, Executive Director of the Center. Professor Talaat provided a comprehensive explanation of the historical problems of desertification in Sudan and touched on the best practices that were used in Sudan to combat desertification and reduce its effects, including local initiatives of the population to confront desert encroachment, and Abdel Majid considered that good practices and solutions provided by local people in Sudan in combating desertification can be one of the most important lessons learned. Professor Talaat’s presentation included forests’ problems in Sudan and the horrific deterioration of the resource.

The session was attended by a group of Sudanese experts, academics and journalists, and a constructive discussion took place about the proposed solutions.

In conclusion, Deriba Center for Environmental Studies thanked the State of Kuwait for providing the opportunity and the honourable audience for their participation, and special thanks to Professor Talaat for the valuable information and satisfactory presentation of the problems of desertification in Sudan.
